What is Beacon?
Beacon is a smart device you mount on your wall to constantly clean your air and surfaces. It uses an invisible ultraviolet light called 222nm Far-UVC to safely neutralize harmful germs like bacteria, viruses, and mold. Beacon uses smart sensors to safely adjust its cleaning based on who is in the room. It plugs right into a normal US 120V wall outlet, so you don't need to worry about chemicals, changing filters, or complicated wiring, and you can control it right from an app on your phone.
What is 222nm Far-UVC light?
It is a specific type of ultraviolet (UV) light. Unlike other UV lights, 222nm Far-UVC is a wavelength strong enough to neutralize germs, but has not been shown to penetrate human skin or eyes. This makes it the only UV light available today that can safely and effectively clean a room while people and pets are around.
How is Beacon different from regular UV light?
Most UV cleaning devices use a wavelength called 254nm (sometimes referred to as UVC, GUV, or germicidal UV). This type of light is effective against germs but dangerous to people, so it can only be used in empty rooms. The moment it turns off, germs start building up again. Beacon uses a different wavelength — 222nm Far-UVC — that is just as effective against germs but safe to use around people under standards set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Because of this, Beacon can run continuously, keeping your space clean around the clock rather than only between occupancies.
Is Beacon safe for my family and pets?
Yes! Over 100 scientific studies show that this specific light is safe to use around people and animals. The studies show this light cannot penetrate the surface of human or animal skin and eyes, but right through microscopic germs to neutralize them. Beacon also has built-in smart sensors and patented operating system to make sure it always operates within safe limits.
Are there long-term studies on 222nm Far-UVC safety?
Yes! Long-term studies on mice and humans have shown no negative effects on skin or eyes, even with continuous use. Beacon meets strict established safety standards under the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and uses patented sensor technology to ensure it always complies with safe levels.
Major universities and academic institutions have extensively studied 222nm Far-UVC for decades, including Columbia University, Harvard University, the University of Maryland, the University of St. Andrews, Kobe University, NASA, and the EPA.
Does Beacon create ozone or byproducts?
Beacon produces only trace amounts of ozone. Beacon is UL 867 compliant with ozone levels, which are far below strict, national safety standards, meaning it won't impact your indoor air quality. The cleaning process doesn't use any chemicals, leave behind any messy residues, or have any disposable components.
Does it really work?
Yes, it destroys up to 99.99% of tested germs in the air and on surfaces. This has been proven in independent labs, university research, and real-world environments. Visit our website to see some of our latest test results.
How long does it take to clean a room?
It starts working in minutes. Most rooms are cleaned within 1 to 2 hours, and once clean, Beacon keeps it that way as long as it's running. Smaller rooms will clean faster than larger ones, and adding more Beacons speeds up the cleaning time for any room.
What pathogens does Beacon neutralize?
Testing shows Beacon works against a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This includes common pathogens like the common cold (coronaviruses), flu, RSV, SARS-CoV-2, as well as tougher germs like MRSA, C. diff, and C. auris.
How is Beacon installed and powered?
It's a simple, do-it-yourself setup. Beacon comes with a wall mount and a long power cord that plugs right into a normal wall outlet, so you don't need to hire an electrician. We recommend mounting it about 8 feet high to comply with current standards and for the best results. You can find the full installation guide on our website and in the Beacon app.
How many Beacons do I need for my space?
One Beacon covers up to 500 ft², which is usually perfect for one room. If you have a larger open space or want to cover multiple rooms, you should add one Beacon for every 500 ft².
Where should I place my Beacon?
Mounting Beacon about 8 feet high and pointing it towards the middle of the room works best as it maximizes the volume of the light (think of a flashlight). Make sure not to block it: Beacon cleans the air and any surfaces the light can reach.
Does Beacon need Wi-Fi?
Yes, it needs Wi-Fi and uses Bluetooth, but only for the initial setup. You can turn your Beacon on and off with the companion app, or with the power button on the device. The mobile app also lets you easily set schedules and manage multiple devices all in one place.
What maintenance is required?
Almost none! Just dust it off occasionally with a dry cloth. The lamp lasts up to 10,000 hours, and when it finally needs replacing, you can easily pop a new one in yourself without any tools.
What does Beacon cost to run?
Because it uses very little electricity (11 watts, about the same as a small LED bulb), it only costs around $1.25 to $1.50 in electricity per month based on average U.S. rates. There are no filters to buy or replace ever.
What regulatory standards does Beacon meet?
Beacon is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also meets strict national and international standards for electrical safety, ozone compliance, and safe human light exposure:
- IES/ANSI RP-27.1-22 for photobiological safety, aligned with ACGIH TLVs for 222nm.
- UL 867 for ozone compliance.
- UL 153 for product safety.
- FCC Class A/B/C for radio frequency.
- CE for EU safety and quality.
