How to Pay for Beacon With Your HSA or FSA

What qualifies for HSA/FSA spending on home health products, from bandages to air purifiers to Far-UVC disinfection devices like Beacon.

If you have money in a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can use it to purchase Beacon. At checkout, select Flex as your payment method and pay with your pre-tax HSA or FSA dollars — no separate doctor's appointment or Letter of Medical Necessity required.

Here's what you need to know about how these accounts work and why using them for Beacon is straightforward.

What HSA and FSA accounts are for

Both account types run on the same section of the tax code: IRC 213(d), as implemented by the IRS in Publication 502, which defines medical expenses as "the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body."

That definition covers a wider range of products and is not limited to prescriptions and doctor visits. Any product that's primarily designed to address a specific medical need rather than general wellness could be eligible.

What makes a product HSA/FSA eligible

The IRS distinguishes between medical products and general wellness products. Items that serve a clear, primary medical function are eligible without extra documentation. Products that serve both medical and general purposes (sometimes called "dual-purpose" items) typically require additional documentation to establish the medical need.

Some products are always eligible without any paperwork:

  • Blood sugar test kits and monitoring supplies
  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Hearing aids and batteries
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Oxygen equipment for breathing conditions
  • Bandages and wound care supplies
  • CPAP machines and supplies

What about air purifiers and general air quality products?

Standard air purifiers sit in the dual-purpose category, as they are beneficial to almost anyone, regardless of medical need. For a general-use air purifier to qualify, a user typically needs to establish that it's being used specifically to treat a diagnosed condition like asthma, allergic rhinitis, or COPD.

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a document from a licensed clinician connecting a specific product to a specific diagnosed condition. Some HSA/FSA payment processors, including Flex, now build a brief clinical consultation into checkout so the letter can be issued in the same transaction rather than requiring a separate doctor's visit.

Beacon is HSA/FSA eligible without an LMN

Beacon is an EPA-registered disinfection device and qualifies for HSA and FSA purchase without a Letter of Medical Necessity. You can complete your purchase at checkout using your HSA or FSA card through Flex.

HSA vs. FSA: a quick comparison

Both account types follow the same IRS eligibility standard, with a few practical differences:

HSA FSA
Who owns the funds You do, permanently Your employer's plan
Unused funds Roll over indefinitely Often forfeited or limited carryover
Eligibility standard IRC 213(d), applied directly IRC 213(d), plus whatever the employer's plan layers on top
Accepts a Letter of Medical Necessity for dual-purpose items Yes, per the IRS standard Usually, but the specific plan can be stricter

HSA funds are yours outright, so eligibility comes down to the IRS standard alone. FSA funds are administered through your employer's plan, and some plans apply tighter rules than the IRS requires. If you have any uncertainty about your specific FSA plan, check your plan documents before purchasing.

How to buy Beacon with your HSA or FSA

Select Flex at checkout on meetbeacon.com. Enter your HSA or FSA card details through the Flex payment flow. Your pre-tax dollars cover the purchase, which makes Beacon more accessible to households managing respiratory conditions, caring for an immunocompromised family member, or simply prioritizing the reduction of environmental pathogen spread,
