How to Disinfect a Nursery With Fewer Chemicals

You've spent weeks getting the nursery right. Non-toxic paint, organic cotton sheets, and the crib positioned away from drafts. 

But what about keeping it clear of germs? On average, babies and young children get seven to eight respiratory infections a year. Disinfecting spaces is a top concern, but many parents struggle with the tradeoff of over-using chemicals (wipes, sprays) in the room where their baby sleeps. 

Children are more vulnerable to chemicals

A 2020 study published via ScienceDaily found that infants in homes with high-frequency use of cleaning products had notably higher rates of recurrent wheeze and asthma by age three compared to infants in homes with low product use — 10.8% versus 7.7% for recurrent wheeze

Infants are more vulnerable to this kind of exposure than adults. They spend the vast majority of their time indoors, breathe faster relative to their body size, and are in close, repeated contact with the surfaces being cleaned. The American Lung Association specifically recommends avoiding cleaning sprays and air fresheners around children, noting that VOCs and fragrance compounds in many disinfectants can be harmful to a developing respiratory system.

So the instinct to keep the nursery chemical-light isn't overcautious. It's backed by the same body of research that's been informing your other choices in this room.

The disinfection challenge

No parent wants to see their child sick. Unfortunately, illnesses like RSV and pertussis are both real risks in the first months of life, and both can be severe.

RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for infants in the U.S. Pertussis — whooping cough — is showing a resurgence: the CDC logged more than 26,000 cases nationally in 2025, the highest count in over a decade, driven in part by declining vaccination rates. Newborns are most vulnerable because they haven't yet completed the DTaP vaccine series, which starts at two months and requires multiple doses to build full protection.

What's actually in most disinfectant sprays

Most conventional disinfectants work by depositing a chemical agent onto a surface, where it reacts with and breaks down pathogens. However, that same chemistry that breaks down a virus is also what's being released into the air your baby breathes for the next several hours.
